Gather ’round, friends! It’s time for the final installment of Color Confessions! This month’s edition is going to be a little different than previous months because we’re going back to the basics. Yes, before all the lipstick, gloss, stains, plumpers, primers (you get the picture), there was lip balm. You gotta protect your lips to keep them in their best shape, don’tcha? If you’re in Chicago experiencing these extreme temperatures right now, you’ll know your lips are probably in need of some extra TLC too! I’m especially excited for this post because none other than real-life beauty guru Laurie of 312 Beauty is with us talking all things lip care.
There’s a myth that Chapstick and Carmex have ingredients that make your lips “addicted” to them. Which ingredients should I steer clear of? | Addiction may be an urban legend, but I do think there are a few ingredients best to avoid. It’s important to let your lips breathe — a.k.a. back off of the Vaseline. Anything with petrolatum actually suffocates your lips and acts as a barrier so moisture can’t get in. If you put it on when your lips are chapped, they’re going to stay that way.
So many lip balms, so little time… Here are a few of Laurie’s favorites!
What is your #1 tip for preventing chapped lips? | Look for balms with hydrating oils and butters, like coconut, shea and olive, to moisturize your lips. Use throughout the day, before wearing lip color and always before bed!
SPF for lips… is it really necessary? | Absolutely. That skin is more sensitive and susceptible to damage. I’m admittedly not as diligent on applying SPF on my lips, and I have several lip freckles because of it. My grandfather had melanoma on the lip — it is a lasting reminder to me the scary power of the sun.
So I may or may not have skimped on lip treatments this winter. What are your favorite products for treating chapped lips now that the damage has been done? | Yes To has these amazing new balms with cocoa and shea butters for under $3 [see above]. The grapefruit is fresh and citrusy. Stash these on your nightstand, in your bathroom, office and inside your purse to make sure you never have chapped lips again. I also carry around Linden Beauty La Balmba Rosa everywhere I go. It’s a super nutrient rich balm that adds a sheer pink hue to my lips. It’s perfect.
Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. That is 24k gold.
What are your favorite lip products, from high-end to low-end? | I have many favorites – it’s hard to pick just one! There are so many incredible on the low end that have really quality ingredients. I love Yes To and S.W. Basics Organic Balms, the latter of which tastes like chocolate. Yum! Also, I discovered Ellovi last year. They make this crazy delicious body butter with only six ingredients and recently turned it into a lip butter as well. It’s only $5 for a tube! That said, I seriously appreciate a luxe balm. Tatcha makes a lip balm with camellia oil and 24karat gold [see above]. Enough said. Also, one of my biggest splurges is By Terry Baume de Rose [see below].
Do you recommend using a lip scrub? If so, which is your favorite and how often should I use it? | I like to carve out some time every Sunday for some at-home spa treatments and almost always add in a lip scrub while I’m masking! It feels so good – especially in the winter – to slough off dead skin from the lips. I love the Sara Happ Lip Scrubs. She collaborated with Marla Beck of Bluemercury on a limited edition version that smells of lemons — if you can track that down at a Bluemercury boutique, it’s the best.
Help! My lips look beyond repair, and I need a quick fix. Any tips? | Skip the lipstick! If you’re in a pinch, grab some sugar, mix it with olive oil and spread on your lips. Then, layer on a hydrating lip balm. When my lips are really dry, I layer on Osmia Organics Honey-Myrrh Lip Repair. The manuka honey is a powerhouse healer!
I like a little color in my lip products. Which tinted lip balms do you recommend? | I love the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments. They come in the best colors – Berry and Cherry are my favorites – and also have an SPF 15. I also love RMS Beauty Lip Shines and Kjaer Weis Lip Tints. With these brands, it’s not color or moisture. You get the best of both worlds.
Well there ya have it. If you were in need of a new lip balm before this post, you definitely don’t need to look any further! A big thank you to Laurie for stopping by The Naked Canvas! If you haven’t already, be sure to check out her amazing beauty blog here!
That just about wraps up my final Color Confessions post! I had such a fun time collaborating with some of my favorite bloggers and friends. If you missed the previous months, you can find them here [August, September, October, November, December]. Now if you don’t mind, I need to go throw on a second pair of fuzzy socks and de-thaw my hands! Stay warm, everyone!
