Yesterday morning while treating myself to a Starbucks veggie and fontiago breakfast sandwich (YUM!), I received a call from my best friend Alexa. Generally, this would have been out of the ordinary since the call arrived during working hours (and we talk on Facebook chat, duh), but it was especially out of the blue since she had just left for a romantic getaway in Punta Cana the day before. Calls had been reserved for emergencies only, so naturally I panicked and picked up.
“St-e-phh??” Great, she was breaking up.
“What’s wrong? Are you okay!?”
“Alexa, I can’t hear you. Are you alright??”
“Oh my god. ERMERGHERD. OH. MY. GOD.”
Now, for finding out that not only your first close friend, but your best friend is engaged, I think this was a pretty normal reaction. But for this couple in particular, it’s been a looong time coming. Allow me to elaborate.
Alexa and her boyfriend Adam have been dating for nearly a decade. Yup, you read that correctly. At the tender ages of 14 and 16, they got together and have existed as one entity ever since. No on-again, off-again bullshit. Alexa often jokes that directly after she was born, the doctor handed her over to Adam, who said in a very ‘Big’ way, “I got it.” Slightly creepy? Yes. Completely accurate? 100%. While cynicism may get the best of you, and you may think “Psh, that’ll never last,” trust me, it will. There’s just something about this couple that just works. They are the exception to the rule.
Seeing these two people together really reminds me how love should be. While love is certainly anything but easy, that’s exactly what Alexa and Adam make it seem like. They make the silences comfortable. The arguments constructive. The little things valuable. Seeing their relationship has always put it into perspective for me that when you find the right person, there shouldn’t be any question or doubt about how the other person feels, and all the childish games people play go out the window.
Alexa and Adam, I couldn’t be more thrilled about your engagement. I’m beyond excited to be a part of the journey you’re embarking upon. Thank you for always being a constant reminder that true love is out there. I love you guys.
